Google ‘Scraps’ Orkut!

Orkut has now officially shut down. Google has bid farewell to the site that unfolded the world of social networking to all of us. Through scraps and communities, we found long lost friends and made new. All of this will now only remain in our memories and in archives.

Google will preserve Orkut Community Archive – 51 million communities, 120 million topics, and more than 1 billion interactions. So, we can still go down the memory lane to visit it once in a while.

Probably, we will not miss you Orkut but your mention will always be nostalgic!

Sparkling New Kindle - The Next Best Thing to Paper When it Comes to Reading

It is indeed true; reading a book on a screen is painful. Especially, when it’s so engrossing, that you can’t keep the book down. And when it comes to continue reading way past your bedtime, well you can take a book to bed but not a screen.

The people at Amazon like to think otherwise. As they have launched a new successor to their e-book reader, the most popular – Kindle. This new version is 20 per cent faster than its predecessor while it also boasts twice the storage.

It is light, small and can be tossed into your bag or pocket easily.

(Haven’t given a try to e-book readers? Then you should definitely try this baby. You’ll never go back to reading paper. It throws no glare back at your eyes even under the brightest sun. It also mimics paper like texture and page turning feel.)

Apart from the physical appearances and ease of usability, this small wonder packs lots of new and impressive features:

Kindle FreeTime: Call it your kids’ personal motivator for improving their reading skills. It provides a set of select must-read books for your kids to read, and also reward them with achievement badges once they reach reading milestones. If you are a parent then this will definitely help you keep a track on total time spent reading, number of words looked up, badges earned and books read.

Vocab builder: It automatically stores words looked up in the dictionary to expand your knowledge and reinforce retention.

No set up required: Start right-out-of-the-box reading.

Smart Lookup: Integrates a full dictionary definition with references linked to X-Ray and Wikipedia.

Improved battery-life: Enjoy reading for weeks without touching your charger.

Auto backup: Cloud backups your Kindle books.

ETR (Estimated Time to Read): The device has become smarter and will be able to tell you how much time you will take to finish the book or a chapter based on your reading speed.

Share: Like a book, loved a quote, share it on Facebook and Twitter

Study: New Technology Becomes Obsolete After Five Years

Technology is an ever-evolving field. It progresses by constantly replacing outdated and obsolete technology. The electronic products and gadgets that you hold so dearly become outdated sooner than you think. To illustrate it more clearly, The Consumer Electronics Association has recently revealed its report on a survey they conducted, named as ‘CE Product Life Cycle study’.
It tries to understand users’ perspectives of product life cycles for various consumer electronic items such as smartphones, cameras, laptops, computers, gaming consoles, etc.

As per the findings of the survey, on an average, these products lose their relevancy in five years and need to be upgraded. The highest life expectancy is 7.4 years, voted for televisions; while smartphones have the lowest expectancy of 4.6 years. So, if recently you think your relationship with your gadget has lost its spark, you are ‘obseletely’ right!

7 Ways to Extend Battery Life of your Smartphone

Draining battery is one of the worst nightmares in today’s world of smartphones. Your phone be of any brand, operating system or configuration, your relieving moment is when you see plug point to connect its charger. Here are some simple tips we've gathered over our personal experiences you may consider to extend the battery life.

1 Uninstall apps you do not use

Take a quick look at the number of apps installed on your phone. You may find few apps that you have not used in ages. Uninstall them. They may be consuming power. If there are few such pre-loaded apps that you cannot uninstall, at least disable them. That will help. Same goes with unnecessary widgets and live wallpapers.

Delete junk

Once in a while take some time out to maintain your phone. Delete all the unnecessary files such as forwarded photos, videos, or blurred photos. They consume space and make the phone run slow, which further results in consuming more battery.

Update apps

Many times apps are updated to consume lesser power. Keep the apps updated so that they co-operate with you to extend the battery life of your smartphone.

Keep a tab on apps running in the background.

Many times, even after closing, particular apps silently run in the background. Go to Settings and check for the apps that are running in the background and force stop them.

Turn the data connection off

At some places where you know that the signal strength is very low, switch off the data connection. Your smartphone continuously searches for the network draining the battery.

Reduce refresh frequency

Apps such as facebook, gmail, twitter, etc notify you on every e-mail or message received. While it is a good idea to be in touch with your friends, it may cost the battery life. It is best to check for such notifications manually. If not you can at least reduce the frequency of getting alerts. E.g if your facebook app refreshes every 30 mins, you can set it to refresh after couple of hours or more.

Power saving mode

If your phone’s battery is still running low, you can extend its battery life by using power saving mode. This limits the phone’s operation to bear minimum and allows battery to run longer.
